Workout of the Month

October '23
Positioned 2 floors below the fire floor, this area will be used for supplying special equipment, additional hose, air mask, oxygen and air cylinders, tools, radios and keys. The electrical power has failed and the subsequent loss of elevator use has happened. Whose making it to floor 18?

Help Needed!
We are requesting data from the field on what an appropriate pass / fail time should look like for this functional test. This month's workout is appropriately named Fire Duty, performed in bunker gear and has zero scaling options. Our contention is our line of work doesn't have a sliding scale for age or years of service. Can you or can you not performed the required work assigned to you in a timely manner.
We kindly ask any member completing this workout to forward the following to healthandladders@boston.gov:
- time
- age
- sex
- years of service

Bulletproofing your shoulders isn't always fun. It involves flexibility, often lighter weight, focus and a plan. Going heavy isn't the answer here. Incorporating the Crossover Symmetry 2x a week is our recommendation for ensuring your shoulders withstand the rigors of the job. Looking for a workout that test strength and shoulder stability while fatigued ... give "Church Rakes Only" a try.

Have you ever wondered why you are sore and fatigued the day after a good fire? Regardless of your fitness level or training regimen, fire duty tends to hit areas you didn’t realize existed. One reason could be that most of your time in the gym focuses around strength gained from machines and barbells. As a whole, most firefighters aren’t taxing their bodies enough with movements that require stabilizing and balance. May’s workout of the month tries to mimic that 1st due adrenaline and day after DOMs.
Give it a try and let us know what you think.
