Due to Easter falling on Marathon Weekend, this year’s Rowathon will take place throughout April ... with an In-Person Event on Sunday, April 27th.
Civilians and sworn members are “challenged” to participate in one of two ways.
Option #1 (In-Person Event)
When: April 27th (Sun) @ 10a - doors open at 930a
Where: The Phoenix (located around the corner from HQ @ 54 Newmarket Sq)
RSVP: By April 21st
Assemble a team of 6 to 16 firefighters and row a distance equivalent to a marathon - 42,195 meters. If you have 16+ participants, consider fielding two teams. Teams will participate head-to-head in a friendly, competitive setting. The Concept 2 erg’s monitor will be programmed for the distance. Participants may alternate rowing as needed. Teams must be composed of members from the same firehouse or HQ.
Teams should RSVP by Monday, April 21st to participate @ the Phoenix.
To register, please email healthandladders@boston.gov with your firehouse & name of the team captain.
Team captains will receive further details before the event.
Option #2 (Traditional Rowathon)
When: April 1st to April 27th
Where: Your Firehouse or HQ Gym
Entries: Submit a screenshot of your time to healthandladders@boston.gov by April 30th.
Assemble a team and row a distance equivalent to a marathon - 42,195 meters. The Concept 2 erg’s monitor must be programmed for the distance (video below). This must be completed in one sitting and participants may alternate rowing as needed. There is no cap on the size of the team. However, your team must be composed of members from the same firehouse. Firehouses may also organize multiple teams.
Important
Please do not abruptly let go of the rower's handle, as this will cause it to recoil violently. Stay in control and return the handle to its cradle.
Only the firefighter actively rowing in the seat may row. Members off to the side may not pull on the handle during transitioning.
2024's time to beat is 2:28:25 by Eng 9 / Lad 2
RSVP'ing is not needed for firehouse completion.
Once completed, each team will take a picture of their group and their erg monitor (time) and email it to healthandladders@boston.gov by Wednesday, April 30th.
